Leaders of the Ely Area Senior Citizens purchased the former Rothman Garage with a grant from the IRRRB, envisioning a welcoming space for local seniors.

Volunteers rolled up their sleeves to transform the structure—building a kitchen, meeting rooms, and craft areas—with support from the IRRRB, ARDC, AEOA, and Senior Center fundraisers.

The Ely Senior Center opened its doors, creating a new home for connection, support, and community.
1984
1984
The center became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, ensuring community ownership, eligibility for grants, and long-term sustainability.
2011-2024
2011-2024
Energy retrofits added solar panels, insulation, and efficient windows and doors.
A major renovation modernized nearly every part of the facility — the kitchen, windows, lighting, and energy systems.
New carpeting, blinds, rolling tables, chairs, and an art display system refreshed the interior.
2024-2025

A generous donation from Twin Metals Minnesota allowed for a full roof replacement—securing the future of the Community Center.
